Paul's Story
At 59, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Today—years later—my PSA levels remain low, and my life is unchanged.
The CPCC was created by a group of Canadian oncologists to invest in "treatment innovation research" to produce breakthroughs for men within 4-6 years. Specifically, our aim is to achieve higher cure rates with fewer side effects.

A 100% and 95% 10-year cancer-free rate has been observed following the use of SABR among low-risk and favorable intermediate risk patients, respectively.

There are several different treatment options for men when they are first diagnosed with prostate cancer. Some of these treatments have a greater risk of side effects, including erectile dysfunction and incontinence.
Our goal at CPCC is to achieve higher cure rates with fewer side effects, so that men have a better chance at re-establishing their pre-treatment sexual function. SABR has been shown to have less side effects than surgery (PACE-A trial).
Historically, about 50% of men treated for prostate cancer suffer from erectile dysfunction.
Dr. Andrew Loblaw discusses how Cure Prostate Cancer Canada is transforming prostate cancer treatment to deliver life-changing results.
The SABR Prostate Trial-PCF and our partners are funding a national clinical trial to demonstrate the benefits of Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR).
The trial, which is taking place at nine Canadian cancer centres (and is part of a large-scale international trial called PACE-B), comes after early research indicated that SABR may deliver better cure rates with fewer side effects than the standard radiotherapy protocol.
With SABR, radiation sessions are reduced from 39 to just 5.

At 55, I was fit, active, and running a business —then I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Thanks to groundbreaking treatment at Sunnybrook, I’m now cancer-free.
Prostate cancer is the #1 cancer for men. In Canada, one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. In 2023, it is estimated that more than 25,000 Canadian men were diagnosed with the disease, and nearly 5,000 men will die from prostate cancer.
The biggest factor in the growth of prostate cancer is age. However, studies have shown that 30% of 30-year-olds have cancerous cells in their prostate, a proportion that goes up 10% for every decade of life. Since prostate cancer is related to the production of male hormones, no man can consider himself immune. But, caught early, prostate cancer has a very high cure rate and with treatments like SABR, men don't have to compromise their continence and sexual function.
Almost all funding for prostate cancer research is for “basic research,” the kind that takes place in the laboratory. The work these scientists are doing is ground-breaking, but results are at least 20 years away.
Our goal is to find solutions that will cure men in their lifetime. Created by a group of oncologists, CPCC invests in “treatment innovation research”. We are the only organization in Canada dedicated to funding this kind of research for prostate cancer.
Treatment innovation is a form of clinical research that has the ability to generate breakthroughs for men within 4-6 years. Conducted by clinical oncologists with actual prostate cancer patients, these studies apply known treatment methods in innovative ways in order to achieve higher cure rates.
A lot of men, when first diagnosed with prostate cancer, are more concerned about becoming impotent than they are about dying. Unfortunately, this is a very real threat. More than 50% of men with prostate cancer suffer from erectile dysfunction as a result of treatment. Our goal is to achieve higher cure rates with fewer side effects, so that men have a better chance at re-establishing their pre-treatment functioning. This is what we mean by “a cure without compromise.”
